SLVC’s collaborates with other conservation-minded organizations to protect land in Silicon Valley
Purchasing Agricultural Easements
Agricultural easements assure that farmland remains as such in perpetuity, while allowing owners and their heirs to work the property. SVLC brokered purchase of the 480 acre Carnadero Agricultural Preserve south of Gilroy. Partners included the Santa Clara Valley Water District, The Nature Conservancy, the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority, The Trust for Public Land, The California Department of Conservation, the American Farmland Trust and the National Resources Conservation Service. SVLC also purchased easements on 2 adjoining properties, Mission Organics, a 175 acre organic lettuce farm and Taylor Farms, a 510 acre farm, the largest single easement to date. Both of theses properties involved multiple agency cooperation that was spearheaded by the Land Conservancy. |
Management of Donated Critical Habitat
Land donated to SVLC for stewardship and preservation of critical habitat. SVLC was given 116 acres of prime serpentine for Bay Checkerspot Butterfly habitat on Tulare Hill in south San Jose. Partners included Calpine Corporation, California Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the California Energy Commission. SVLC has also been granted 3 additional separate parcels totaling 95 acres of critical habitat for the Bay Checkerspot Butterfly on Coyote Ridge. These also required the cooperation of multiple agencies that was directed by SVLC. SVLC has also received a conservation easement on 206 acres at the edge of San Jose for open space preservation and protection of the California tiger salamander and the California red legged frog. |
